Major Symptoms
A person that has achondroplasia will have serious back and spinal issues. Compressions of the spinal cord are due to the abnormality of the structure of the skull and vertebrae which results in difficulty of breathing and also paralysis. There can also be some development issues during childhood. Having an abnormal head can also create narrow internal passage ways causing some hearing loss and steady infections. Achondroplasia children are learning to sit, walk, and crawl later than their peers. Children can also develop a curved spine or bowed legs.
Someone with the disease will have abnormally small or shorter legs, arms, feet, hands, toes, and fingers. The abdomen of this person will be normal, along with their head. This can create severe problems because their spine can be too big for their body and the size of their skull could cause brain bleeds.
